Gachagua poses new challenges for opposition alliance

Fresh off a significant victory in a recent parliamentary by-election, former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to strengthen his political presence in the Mount Kenya region. As the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), he plans to tour Meru and Embu counties, urging unity within the region to enhance its influence ahead of the 2027 elections. Although Gachagua is ineligible to run due to a Senate impeachment in October 2024, he aims to position himself as a kingmaker by supporting a candidate from his base. This comes as he faces opposition from politicians affiliated with the ruling UDA party, who are advocating for a separate voting bloc in Mt Kenya East. Gachagua’s recent remarks hint at the potential for his party to back a youthful leader for the presidency if he cannot participate himself, prompting other opposition members to reconsider their strategies for the upcoming election.

Why It Matters

The dynamics in Kenyan politics are shifting as Gachagua seeks to consolidate support in the historically united Mt Kenya region, which has a strong voting bloc rooted in social and political history. His previous role as Deputy President under William Ruto has created a rift following his impeachment, illustrating the volatility within political alignments. The DCP’s recent success adds pressure to the existing political landscape, particularly as Gachagua pushes for a significant share of power in any future coalition. The emergence of rival factions within the region signals a more fragmented political environment as the country approaches the 2027 elections, highlighting the importance of Mt Kenya’s voting power in national politics.
