Turkey does not meet legal requirements for F-35 eligibility, State Dept. letter states

Turkey is still not eligible to rejoin the F-35 fighter jet program, according to a letter from the US State Department to Congress. The July 22 letter, which responds to a query from Rep. Wesley Bell, reaffirms that Turkey must resolve its acquisition of the Russian S-400 air defense system and comply with US laws before any F-35 aircraft can be transferred. The State Department emphasized that Turkey has not yet met these conditions, and any resolution must align with US national security interests. The letter also noted ongoing diplomatic engagements between the US and Turkey, highlighting Turkey’s role in various diplomatic initiatives despite concerns over its ties with Hamas.

Why It Matters

The F-35 program is critical for NATO and US military capabilities, with Turkey’s participation historically significant due to its strategic location. Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 system in 2017 led to its suspension from the F-35 program, escalating tensions between Washington and Ankara. The US continues to sanction Hamas-related entities, indicating ongoing concerns regarding Turkey’s financial ties to the group. The situation reflects broader geopolitical dynamics, as Turkey’s actions impact US-Turkey relations and NATO cohesion amidst regional security challenges.
