Michael Smerconish discusses New Jersey error related to noncitizen voting

Michael Smerconish, a host on CNN and SiriusXM, acknowledged during his program that he can no longer assert that noncitizen voting does not occur, following New Jersey’s revelation of a software error. This error resulted in the improper registration of approximately 6,600 noncitizens, with fewer than 400 actually casting votes. Smerconish, who had previously referenced a New York Times analysis denying widespread illegal voting, indicated that this new data would provide ammunition for critics of noncitizen voting denial. Political analyst Mark Halperin concurred, urging for an independent investigation into the incident and questioning the extent of the issue. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill attributed the error to a software malfunction related to driver’s license applications and has since ordered the removal of the affected registrations and initiated an investigation.

Why It Matters

The situation in New Jersey highlights potential vulnerabilities in the voter registration process, particularly regarding noncitizens. Historical debates around voter fraud have intensified, especially in the context of allegations surrounding noncitizen voting. Although the number of improperly registered voters was relatively small, the incident raises concerns about the integrity of electoral systems and the verification processes in place. It underscores the importance of accurate voter registration and the ongoing discussions surrounding election security, which have been central issues in U.S. political discourse.
