Oil prices rise to $100 following Red Sea attacks

At least one Saudi oil tanker has been attacked in the Red Sea, heightening concerns over energy supplies already strained by shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Brent Crude prices surged to $100 a barrel, marking a 40% increase over the past month, the highest since May. The Iran-aligned Houthi group in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack, asserting a blockade against Saudi Arabia. Following the incident, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran would be held accountable for the Houthis’ actions, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned that the Houthis were making a mistake by escalating tensions in the region. The blockade and recent attacks threaten another vital shipping route, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is crucial for global oil supply.

Why It Matters

The Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz are critical chokepoints for global oil transportation, with approximately 20% of the world’s oil passing through these waterways. The Houthis had previously avoided direct involvement in the U.S.-Iran conflict but have now escalated tensions, risking further destabilization of international energy markets. The closure of these shipping routes could significantly impact Asian oil importers who rely heavily on Middle Eastern crude. This situation is exacerbated by ongoing military actions between the U.S. and Iran, which have intensified following a breakdown of peace negotiations earlier this year.
