Tehran warns UK bases used by US for attacks will be targeted

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a warning on Thursday, declaring that any British military base utilized by the United States to launch attacks on Iran would become a “legitimate target.” The IRGC accused the UK of playing a central role in recent US and Israeli military operations against Iran. The warning follows reports that the US has begun deploying B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in England after exhausting cruise missiles from warships in the Indian Ocean. The IRGC criticized Britain’s involvement, asserting it has contributed significantly to regional instability and the recent escalation in hostilities. Tensions have heightened since a joint offensive by the US and Israel against Iran began in February, with retaliatory missile and drone strikes from Tehran targeting US and Israeli assets in the Gulf.

Why It Matters

This warning from the IRGC underscores the escalating military tensions between Iran, the US, and its allies, particularly in the context of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The use of British military bases by the US marks a significant development, as it implicates the UK in the conflict, further complicating international relations. Historical tensions in the region, including previous US-led interventions and Iran’s responses, contribute to a volatile security environment. The situation is compounded by recent agreements aimed at de-escalation, which have so far failed to mitigate hostilities, as evidenced by the renewed exchanges of strikes and threats in the Strait of Hormuz.
