1.4 million people in Gaza face high levels of acute food insecurity by year’s end

An estimated 1.4 million people in Gaza are projected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity through December 2026, an increase from 1.2 million between mid-April and June. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis indicates that 67% of Gaza’s population will face crisis conditions (Phase 3) or worse, with 212,000 individuals expected to remain in emergency conditions (Phase 4). All five governorates in Gaza are categorized as being in crisis. Although expanded humanitarian assistance following the ceasefire in October 2025 has led to improvements in food security, with food aid reaching approximately 1.49 million people in May, the overall situation remains dire.

Why It Matters

The ongoing food insecurity in Gaza is a result of a protracted humanitarian crisis exacerbated by conflicts and blockades that limit access to essential resources. Historical data shows that the region has faced significant challenges in food production and distribution, leading to high levels of dependency on aid. The IPC classification highlights the severity of the situation, indicating that a significant portion of the population is unable to meet their basic nutritional needs. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for addressing the humanitarian needs in Gaza and planning effective interventions.
