Oil prices rise toward $100 following Red Sea attacks

Oil prices surged on Thursday, reaching their highest levels since early June, driven by escalating tensions in Iran that threaten global oil supplies. Brent crude rose over 5% to nearly $99 per barrel, while U.S. crude increased more than 4% to approximately $91 per barrel. The spike in prices followed claims by Tehran-backed Houthi rebels of attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and their announcement of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. This escalation marks a significant expansion of hostilities beyond the Strait of Hormuz, which is crucial for oil transportation. Currently, oil prices have risen about 35% since the start of October and are over 60% higher compared to the beginning of the year, contributing to an increase in national gas prices, now averaging $4.09 per gallon.

Why It Matters

The rise in oil prices has implications for global markets and inflation, with about 12% to 15% of global maritime trade passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which is vital for oil shipments. The recent tensions come in the context of a collapsed agreement between the U.S. and Iran that was intended to ease conflicts and stabilize prices. Historical data shows that oil prices are sensitive to geopolitical tensions, often resulting in significant economic impacts, including higher consumer borrowing costs as reflected in the rise of U.S. Treasury yields and mortgage rates. As oil supply concerns grow, the potential for further economic strain increases, affecting not just prices but overall market stability.
