Allergy medication recalled due to potential life-threatening cross-contamination

A pharmaceutical company, Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories, has recalled four lots of Cetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets USP 5 mg due to cross-contamination with Ranitidine, a medication for heartburn and acid reflux. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that this contamination poses potential life-threatening risks to individuals with severe allergies to Ranitidine’s ingredients. The recall was initiated on July 18 and later posted by the FDA. The affected tablets, packaged in HDPE bottles containing 100 tablets, could cause severe hypersensitivity reactions or anaphylaxis if ingested by sensitive individuals. Thus far, there have been no reported adverse events related to the recall, and the company is coordinating the return of the recalled products with its distributor, Rising Pharma Holdings Inc.

Why It Matters

Cross-contamination in pharmaceuticals can have serious health implications, especially for individuals with food or drug allergies. Ranitidine was previously recalled in 2019 due to concerns about a potential carcinogen, prompting heightened scrutiny of medications. Allergic reactions to medications can lead to severe complications, including anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention. Ensuring the safety of pharmaceutical products is critical to public health, as even small lapses in manufacturing can lead to significant risks for vulnerable populations.
