What You Need to Know
• At least 5,764 excess deaths occurred in France during a historic heat wave from June 17 to July 2.
• France experienced its hottest days on record on June 24 and June 25, averaging 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Public Health France reported 40 drowning deaths in one week as people sought relief from the heat.

At least 5,764 excess deaths were recorded in France last month due to a historic heat wave, according to Public Health France. The heat wave, which lasted from June 17 to July 2, led to a total of 21,674 deaths in affected regions, significantly higher than the expected 15,910 deaths based on historical data. The agency noted that this excess mortality, representing a 36% increase, was the highest since 2003, when a similar heat wave resulted in approximately 15,000 deaths. The hottest days of this year’s heat wave occurred on June 24 and June 25, with temperatures averaging 86 degrees Fahrenheit and exceeding 104 degrees in many areas. Over half of the unexpected deaths occurred during the peak heat period from June 25 to June 27.

Why It Matters

This event highlights the severe impact of climate change on public health, particularly in Europe, where extreme temperatures have become more frequent. The heat wave’s early onset and intensity affected nearly the entire population, coinciding with active school and work schedules. Historical data shows that heat waves can lead to significant mortality, as evidenced by the 2003 heat wave in France. The rising number of excess deaths underscores the urgent need for effective heat response strategies and climate adaptation measures.
