June 2027 trial date set for ousted Venezuelan president in Manhattan court

Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys for Nicolás Maduro, the ousted Venezuelan president, and his wife, Cilia Flores, have proposed a trial date of June 2027 in their ongoing narco-terrorism and drug trafficking case. A court filing outlined a schedule for pre-trial motions and the exchange of classified evidence, with U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein expected to confirm the timeline during a scheduled court appearance. The defense intends to file a motion to dismiss based on sovereign immunity by September, while pre-trial motions are due in January 2027. Prosecutors have already provided much of the non-classified evidence and aim to deliver most classified materials by November. Maduro and Flores have been detained in Brooklyn while facing allegations of conspiring with drug cartels to smuggle cocaine into the U.S.

Why It Matters

The case against Maduro and Flores is significant as it highlights ongoing U.S. efforts to combat drug trafficking and narco-terrorism linked to foreign leaders. In January 2026, a military operation successfully brought them to the U.S. to face these charges, emphasizing the U.S. government’s stance on international drug trafficking. The allegations stem from claims that they facilitated a considerable flow of cocaine into the United States, impacting public health and safety. This legal battle unfolds against a backdrop of humanitarian crises in Venezuela, exacerbating the scrutiny of Maduro’s regime and its governance.
