Women’s Tennis Players Required to Undergo One-Time Gene Test for Eligibility

What You Need to Know
• The Women’s Tennis Association announced a one-time gene test requirement for female players.
• The SRY gene test, which determines biological sex, can be conducted via cheek swab or blood test.
• The new policy will take effect on July 20, 2026, following a previous policy allowing transgender women to compete.

Tennis players will be required to undergo a one-time gene test to compete on the Women’s Tennis Association tour, as announced by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on July 20, 2026. The test will screen for the SRY gene, which helps determine biological sex, and can be performed using a cheek swab or blood sample. Previously, the WTA allowed transgender women to compete if they declared their gender as female and maintained a reduced testosterone level for two years. The WTA emphasized that the screening process will respect confidentiality and data privacy, and aims to treat all players with dignity. Currently, there are no known transgender women competing at any level of professional tennis.

Why It Matters

This policy change by the Women’s Tennis Association reflects ongoing debates surrounding the inclusion of transgender athletes in sports. The new gene testing requirement aligns with similar measures adopted by other sports federations, including World Athletics and World Boxing. In March 2026, the International Olympic Committee also mandated that only biological female athletes verified by a one-time test could compete in female events. The issue of transgender athletes in competitive sports continues to provoke strong opinions and discussions about fairness and discrimination.
