Giants designate catcher Eric Haase for assignment, focus on rookie catchers

The San Francisco Giants have shifted to an all-rookie catching lineup, designating veteran catcher Eric Haase for assignment after Daniel Susac returned from the injured list. Susac, Drew Cavanaugh, and Jesus Rodriguez will all be available, with Susac expected to take on the primary catching role. Cavanaugh was named the starting catcher for the Giants’ first game of the second half of the season, while Rodriguez has experience playing various positions, including the outfield and infield. Haase, in his 10th MLB season, struggled at the plate with a batting average of .162 and had mixed results defensively, throwing out six of 22 attempted base stealers but allowing multiple wild pitches and passed balls during his time with the team.

Why It Matters

The Giants’ decision to designate Eric Haase underscores their commitment to developing younger talent as they navigate the second half of the season. Historically, teams often turn to rookies to inject energy and adaptability into their roster, particularly when veterans are underperforming. By relying on rookies like Susac, Cavanaugh, and Rodriguez, the Giants aim to build for the future while assessing their current roster’s capabilities. This move reflects broader trends in Major League Baseball, where teams increasingly prioritize youth and potential over veteran experience as they seek to enhance competitiveness.
