Modi states Hormuz crisis had no impact on Railways

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significant advancements in Indian Railways’ electrification, which he stated contributes to the nation’s energy security. Over the past twelve years, the electrification efforts have ensured that train operations remained uninterrupted during global crises, such as those in the Middle East. Before 2014, less than thirty percent of the rail network was electrified, but now nearly ninety-nine percent is fully electrified. This transformation plays a crucial role in maintaining consistent train services, even amid international energy challenges, reinforcing the importance of a robust and reliable rail infrastructure in India.

Why It Matters

The electrification of Indian Railways is a critical component of India’s energy strategy and infrastructure development. Historically, the railway network faced significant operational challenges due to limited electrification, affecting service reliability. Since 2014, the aggressive push towards electrification has not only enhanced operational efficiency but also reduced dependence on fossil fuels, thereby promoting sustainable energy use. As global energy markets fluctuate, a predominantly electrified rail network positions India to mitigate potential disruptions while improving the country’s overall energy resilience and transportation efficiency.
