Sixteen people die from starvation as drought impacts crops in Uganda

At least 16 people have died from hunger in Uganda’s north-eastern region of Karamoja due to a prolonged drought. Farmers report significant crop losses, as the area has experienced little to no rainfall since April, which is the planting season. Climate change, poor rainfall, deforestation, overgrazing, and crop pests are cited as contributing factors to these food shortages. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced plans to seek cabinet approval to purchase additional food supplies for affected families, as many have been left without food. The government has begun distributing emergency food aid, but with large areas of maize, sorghum, and soybeans withered, hopes for a substantial harvest have diminished.

Why It Matters

This situation is part of a recurring pattern of food shortages in Uganda’s semi-arid north-east, which has previously faced severe crises. In 2022, over 2,200 individuals reportedly died from starvation and related illnesses in the region. Experts emphasize the need for improved agricultural practices, including better climate forecasting and investment in irrigation and drought-resistant crops, to mitigate future food insecurity. The historical neglect of agricultural resilience in the face of climate challenges highlights the ongoing vulnerability of communities in this region.
