Pro-Israel network advocates for Germany to defund UNRWA

A new report has revealed a coordinated network of organizations aligned with Israel that are pressuring Germany to withdraw its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Commissioned by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and authored by researcher Alon Sahar, the report indicates that this campaign has intensified since October 2023, following accusations against UNRWA staff of links to Hamas. Germany has become a focal point of this effort, emerging as UNRWA’s largest governmental donor after the U.S. suspended its contributions in early 2024. UNRWA serves approximately 5.9 million Palestinian refugees across multiple regions, offering essential services like education and healthcare. The report outlines a network of groups, including UN Watch and NGO Monitor, which contribute to the campaign by disseminating critical narratives about UNRWA and influencing German policy on the issue.

Why It Matters

Germany’s financial support for UNRWA is crucial as it provides vital services to millions of Palestinian refugees, making the ongoing pressure to defund the agency significant. Historically, Germany has been a key donor to UNRWA since its establishment in 1952. The report highlights a broader trend of discrediting Palestinian institutions while framing the aid debate within the context of German national security and antisemitism. This situation reflects longstanding tensions in international relations concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the role of humanitarian organizations in conflict zones.
