A large crowd gathered on Hannan Street to celebrate the 50th national NAIDOC Week in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Monday. The event began with a 10:30 AM march from the Museum of the Goldfields to the Lord Forrest Precinct, marking the kickoff of week-long celebrations. This year’s theme, “50 Years of Deadly,” honors the contributions of elders, organizers, artists, and communities involved in the NAIDOC movement over the past five decades. Following the march, attendees enjoyed food and information stalls, NAIDOC Award presentations, live music, and a karaoke competition. The week ahead features various events, including an elders luncheon, community celebrations, language presentations, and a youth ball, culminating in the Gold Fields St Ives NINTILA: Kalgoorlie Aboriginal Film Festival showcasing films about First Nations culture until July 10. The program was coordinated by the Goldfields NAIDOC Week committee.

Why It Matters

NAIDOC Week is significant as it celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. The observance of NAIDOC Week dates back to the 1920s, and it has evolved into an important annual event promoting awareness and fostering understanding of Indigenous issues. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, NAIDOC Week highlights the enduring impact of Indigenous communities and their contributions to Australian society. Events throughout the week serve to educate the broader community and to recognize the ongoing efforts toward reconciliation and cultural preservation.
