QUETTA, Pakistan — A speeding passenger bus, carrying more passengers than it was designed for, fell into a rocky ravine in southwestern Pakistan early Friday, leading to the deaths of 40 individuals and injuring eight others. The accident took place in Dana Sar, a remote area located near the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Shahid Rind, a spokesperson for the Balochistan government, reported that the bus had taken on passengers from another vehicle that had broken down, contributing to its overcrowding. In response to the tragedy, President Asif Ali Zardari extended his condolences to the victims’ families and directed authorities to ensure the injured receive adequate medical care. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also expressed sorrow over the loss of life and emphasized the need for proper treatment for the injured.

Why It Matters

Road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Pakistan, often attributed to poor road conditions, lax enforcement of traffic regulations, and unsafe driving practices, particularly in mountainous regions. This incident is one of the deadliest road accidents in recent years, highlighting ongoing safety concerns in the country’s transportation system. In May, a similar accident involving a minibus and a parked bus resulted in 17 fatalities, underscoring the urgent need for improved road safety measures.
