Perth Lynx eliminate breakfast-time away games in WNBL schedule change

The Perth Lynx have secured a significant change in the WNBL schedule ahead of the upcoming season, ensuring that their away games will start no earlier than 10am WST. Previously, the Lynx faced frustrating early morning game times, including a 9am match last season. The new schedule also adjusts night games in Perth to begin at 6pm, aimed at helping teams acclimate more easily to time zone differences. WNBL Chief Operating Officer Justin Nelson emphasized the importance of these changes for player performance and fan engagement. Additionally, the league will expand to nine teams this season, introducing a new finals format where the top five teams compete, enhancing competition and keeping fans engaged throughout the season. The Lynx will kick off their season on October 17 against the Townsville Fire at home.

Why It Matters

This scheduling adjustment is crucial for the Perth Lynx and the WNBL as it aims to improve player performance by allowing adequate preparation time and enhancing fan experience. Historically, the Lynx have struggled with early game times, which could affect attendance and team performance. The league’s expansion to nine teams and the new finals format represent a strategic effort to increase competitiveness and retain fan interest through a more engaging playoff structure. These changes reflect a broader trend in sports leagues to optimize schedules for player welfare and audience satisfaction, which can lead to increased viewership and attendance.
