US offers $10 million reward for information on Signal and WhatsApp hackers

Federal authorities have announced a reward of up to $10 million for information that leads to the identification or location of a Russian state-sponsored cyber group responsible for compromising thousands of Signal and WhatsApp accounts of investigative reporters and U.S. government employees. This cyber operation has been ongoing since at least March, coinciding with an FBI advisory that warned of phishing campaigns aimed at high-value targets by attackers linked to Russian intelligence. The attackers use deceptive messages that appear to be automated support communications, prompting users to click links or provide verification codes. If users comply, they risk linking the attackers’ devices to their accounts or losing access entirely.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the increasing threat of cyber espionage from state-sponsored groups, particularly from Russia, against journalists and government personnel. Phishing attacks have become a common method for cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information, posing significant risks to national security and journalistic integrity. The FBI’s ongoing alerts about these tactics underscore the importance of cybersecurity measures for individuals and organizations that handle confidential information. The U.S. government’s substantial reward reflects the seriousness of the situation and the need for public assistance in mitigating these cyber threats.
