UN warns of severe shortages in Gaza displacement sites for 1.7 million Palestinians

Nearly 1.7 million displaced Palestinians, comprising about 80% of Gaza’s population, are facing dire living conditions across approximately 1,600 displacement sites, the UN has reported. A spokesperson highlighted ongoing violence, including shelling and airstrikes, that continues to endanger civilians. A recent assessment indicated that over 59,000 makeshift shelters are overcrowded, with many families lacking adequate access to drinking water and sanitation. The report also noted significant health risks, including rodent infestations and hazardous waste conditions. Since a ceasefire began on October 10, 2025, Israeli attacks have claimed at least 1,027 lives and injured over 3,280 individuals, following a two-year conflict that resulted in the deaths of over 73,000 Palestinians and extensive infrastructure destruction in Gaza.

Why It Matters

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza reflects the severe consequences of ongoing conflict and displacement. The region has experienced significant violence since October 2023, leading to immense civilian suffering and infrastructure collapse. The UN estimates that reconstruction costs will reach around $70 billion, highlighting the scale of the devastation. The current situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and long-term solutions to support the affected population and restore basic living conditions.
