UN inquiry finds Palestinian children targeted in war crimes in Gaza

A United Nations commission of inquiry has accused Israel of systematically targeting Palestinian children in the occupied Palestinian territory, stating that Israeli actions constitute genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Gaza, as well as war crimes in the West Bank. The commission’s report revealed that approximately 30 percent of those killed in Gaza since the start of Israel’s war in October 2023 were children. Attacks on maternity and neonatal units, along with an aid blockade, have severely impacted children’s chances of survival. Israeli forces have been accused of destroying orphanages and schools, while Palestinian children have reportedly been arbitrarily arrested, tortured, and subjected to sexual abuse in detention. Despite a ceasefire in October 2025, killings and serious injuries have persisted, defying international law.

Why It Matters

The accusations made by the United Nations commission of inquiry against Israel for targeting Palestinian children with genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Gaza and the West Bank are significant due to the high number of child casualties and the ongoing violations of international law. The report sheds light on the devastating impact of the conflict on Palestinian children, including attacks on essential facilities like schools and hospitals, as well as the long-term consequences of trauma and loss. The findings underscore the urgent need for accountability and protection of children in conflict zones to prevent further harm and ensure their rights are upheld.
