Sadiq Khan warns of severe air pollution amid 39C heat in capital

London is bracing for a significant heatwave this week, with temperatures expected to soar to 39C, making it potentially the hottest June on record in the UK. Mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a high air pollution alert and urged residents to limit car journeys and avoid engine idling to help combat rising ozone levels exacerbated by the heat and pollution from continental Europe. The Met Office has placed southern and central England under an amber alert for extreme heat from Monday through Thursday, warning of health risks such as sunburn and heat exhaustion. This year’s soaring temperatures follow a record-breaking spring and a summer in 2022 that was the hottest on record, with May temperatures exceeding 30C.

Why It Matters

This heatwave is part of a concerning trend of increasing extreme weather events linked to climate change, with the Met Office noting that such occurrences are becoming more frequent. The upcoming temperatures could surpass the previous record of 35.6C set in June 1976, a year that saw severe drought, crop failures, and subsequent water rationing in the UK. The implications of rising temperatures not only affect public health but also pose risks to infrastructure, such as power systems that may fail under extreme conditions. Understanding the connection between these weather patterns and climate change is crucial for future preparedness and response strategies.
