Advanced drones and surveillance towers combat crime in remote Alberta

High-tech surveillance measures are enhancing law enforcement’s response to property crime at remote industrial sites in Alberta. On June 6, a gas plant in Red Deer County experienced two fuel theft attempts within hours. The first incident, occurring shortly after 3 a.m., ended with the suspects being apprehended when their getaway vehicle broke down. Later that day, a second theft attempt at 1:21 p.m. was monitored in real-time by Zedcor, a private security company, which allowed police to track the suspects’ vehicle. The Alberta RCMP coordinated a response utilizing a drone and multiple detachments, successfully leading to the suspects’ arrest. This use of advanced technology, including drones and AI-driven surveillance, is increasingly important as rural crime rates in Alberta remain significantly higher than urban areas.

Why It Matters

The rising rural crime rate in Alberta, which was reported to be 54% higher than urban centers in 2023, underscores the need for effective security measures. Historical increases in property crimes, including a surge in copper thefts at critical infrastructure, highlight the vulnerabilities of isolated industrial sites. Advanced surveillance technologies are being adopted to enhance police capabilities, allowing for quicker responses to incidents while reducing the risks associated with high-speed pursuits. The expansion of mobile surveillance systems reflects a growing trend in security that prioritizes proactive measures over reactive responses.
