Yum! Brands sells Pizza Hut for $2.7 billion

Yum! Brands announced the sale of Pizza Hut in a $2.7 billion deal that will transfer ownership of the restaurant chain to a U.S. private equity firm and a Chinese restaurant company. LongRange Capital will acquire Pizza Hut, excluding its mainland China operations, for $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, Yum! China will purchase Pizza Hut China for $1.2 billion. Yum! Brands CEO Chris Turner expressed confidence that the new ownership structures would position Pizza Hut for future growth, citing the deep expertise both firms bring to the restaurant industry. The decision to sell Pizza Hut follows a review initiated in November due to declining comparable-store sales. Pizza Hut was founded in 1958 and became a part of Yum! Brands after PepsiCo divested its restaurant division in 1997.

Why It Matters

This sale marks a significant shift in the ownership structure of one of the world’s largest pizza chains, reflecting broader trends in the restaurant industry, including consolidation and an increasing focus on adapting to local markets. The decision to sell follows a history of performance challenges for Pizza Hut, with the brand facing increased competition in the fast-casual dining sector and a need to innovate its menu offerings. The separation of Pizza Hut from Yum! Brands could allow both entities to focus more strategically on their respective markets and drive growth in a competitive landscape.
