World sanctions on settlers, Israel funds settlements in Palestine

This week, France barred Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and sanctioned settler networks, while Amnesty International accused Israel of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. In response, Israel advanced funding for new settlements, legalized violent outposts, and established a permanent military base in Palestinian-controlled areas. The cabinet approved 103 settlements since late 2022, with many in strategically sensitive areas. Settler violence and expansion continued, with nightly raids setting Palestinian land on fire and Bedouin communities facing harassment and demolition orders.

Why It Matters

The escalating tensions between Israel and Western states, along with accusations of ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, highlight the deepening entrenchment of the settler movement and the erosion of territorial divisions outlined in the Oslo Accords. The Israeli government’s aggressive support for settlements and military presence in Palestinian-controlled areas raise concerns about the potential for further violence and displacement in the region. The international community’s response to these developments will be crucial in determining the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The city of Los Angeles announced a new program to provide free internet access to low-income families, aiming to bridge the digital divide exacerbated by the pandemic. The initiative will offer free Wi-Fi to 18,000 households in public housing developments and another 3,000 devices to families in need. This effort comes as more services move online, highlighting the importance of internet access for education, job searches, and communication.

Why It Matters

Access to reliable internet has become essential in today’s society, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where many activities have shifted online. The lack of internet access disproportionately affects low-income families, hindering their ability to participate in remote learning, work from home, or access crucial information. By providing free internet access and devices to those in need, the city of Los Angeles is taking a step towards creating more equitable opportunities for all its residents.
