Sophie Unwin and her pilot Jenny Holl successfully defended their road race title at the 2026 UEC Para-cycling Road European Championships in Italy, contributing to Great Britain’s total of 18 medals, including three golds. The duo, who previously won gold at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, faced a close challenge in the time trial, finishing just 0.75 seconds behind Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy and Linda Kelly. However, they overcame this setback in the road race, narrowly defeating both Dunlevy and Kelly as well as another Irish pair, Sinead Greenan and Alice Sharpe. Unwin will partner with Sylvia Misztal for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, while Holl will compete for Team Scotland. They are expected to reunite for the Para-cycling Road World Cup in Huntsville, Alabama, in September. Additionally, Crystal Lane-Wright and Amelia Cass secured gold and silver medals in their respective categories.

Why It Matters

This victory underscores the continued success of GB Para-cycling, highlighting the strength and competitiveness of its athletes on the international stage. Unwin and Holl’s partnership has flourished since 2021, evidenced by their multiple medal wins, including their recent European title. The event also reflects the growing recognition of para-sport and its athletes, contributing to increased visibility and support for disability sports. The upcoming Commonwealth Games and World Cup will serve as further opportunities for these athletes to showcase their skills and inspire future generations.
