Nara Organics recalls infant formula after botulism cases in three babies

Nara Organics has recalled its Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula sold nationwide after three infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington developed infant botulism. The infants, aged between 2 and 5 months, consumed the formula between April and May and required hospitalization, where they were treated with BabyBIG, an antitoxin for botulism. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. The recall includes all products sold from July 2025 to June 2026, available at major retailers like Target and online. Infant botulism is a serious illness caused by toxins produced in the intestines, leading to symptoms that may take weeks to appear and can result in severe complications if untreated.

Why It Matters

This recall highlights the ongoing risks associated with infant formulas, particularly regarding contamination that can lead to serious health issues like infant botulism. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes that infant botulism, while rare, requires prompt treatment to prevent severe neurological damage. This incident follows a previous outbreak linked to another formula that resulted in multiple illnesses and a nationwide recall, underscoring the critical need for regulatory oversight in infant food products. Nara Organics, representing less than 1% of the U.S. infant formula market, indicates that while the recall is significant, it is not expected to affect the overall supply of infant formula in the country.
