DHS Agents Visit Legal Aid Offices Assisting Unaccompanied Migrant Children

Agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) visited several nonprofit organizations in the Washington, D.C. area on Thursday that provide legal services to unaccompanied migrant children. Representatives from these organizations reported that HSI agents did not present warrants or subpoenas and were denied entry. Among the groups visited was Kids in Need of Defense, which stated that the operation targeted federal subcontractors assisting unaccompanied children. The visits coincided with a press conference by DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who announced efforts to combat fraudulent custody claims for these children. A spokesperson for DHS confirmed their focus on locating unaccompanied children without confirming the visits to the nonprofits.

Why It Matters

This incident reflects ongoing tensions between the federal government and organizations providing legal assistance to unaccompanied migrant children. The visits align with a broader crackdown on immigration enforcement that has been emphasized by the Trump administration. Legal service providers have previously faced funding cuts, leading to lawsuits that resulted in a court order to restore financial support. Current data indicates significant challenges in tracking unaccompanied migrant children, as reports have shown that many have not appeared for immigration hearings, raising concerns about their safety and legal representation.
