Postman charged with manslaughter after son’s death following night out

A 39-year-old postman, Tony Bartlett, is on trial for the alleged murder of his four-week-old son, Atticus, at their home in Chard, Somerset, on July 16, 2022. Prosecutors claim that after consuming nine pints of alcohol, Bartlett violently shook Atticus, causing severe brain injuries and broken ribs. The incident occurred while Bartlett was briefly left alone with the baby as his partner, Evelyn Ballentyne, went to change clothes. When Ballentyne returned, she found Atticus unresponsive on Bartlett’s lap, prompting emergency services to be called. Despite efforts to save him, Atticus died on July 23, 2022, from his injuries. Bartlett denies the charges, claiming that any harm to the baby was unintentional and suggesting that it could have been caused by Ballentyne instead.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the serious issue of child abuse and the tragic consequences of violent behavior towards infants. According to the NSPCC, over 40,000 children were referred to child protection services in 2020 due to concerns about abuse or neglect in the UK. The trial brings attention to the critical need for awareness and prevention of such incidents, as well as the legal implications surrounding domestic violence and parental responsibility. The outcome of this trial could influence public discourse on child safety and the justice system’s response to cases of extreme violence against vulnerable populations.
