None of the 268 repatriated Nigerians are in South Africa legally, says home affairs

South African anti-immigration groups have mandated that all undocumented foreigners must leave the country by June 30. A recent repatriation effort has seen the return of 268 Nigerian nationals, all confirmed to be in South Africa illegally, as stated by the Department of Home Affairs. These individuals will be issued a five-year travel ban from South Africa. The repatriation follows threats from anti-immigration advocates, and the Nigerian Embassy has facilitated the process, providing emergency travel documents. In addition to the Nigerians, displaced Malawian nationals have sought refuge in Durban amidst fears of violence and are also being arranged for repatriation. The government is taking measures to address illegal immigration while cautioning against xenophobia and violence.

Why It Matters

The situation reflects ongoing tensions around immigration in South Africa, where anti-immigration sentiment has been rising. The government has previously faced criticism for not addressing illegal immigration effectively, leading to social unrest and violence against foreign nationals. Historical patterns of xenophobia in South Africa have resulted in violent attacks on immigrants, particularly during economic downturns. The repatriation of undocumented foreigners, including recent measures impacting Nigerian and Malawian nationals, illustrates the government’s response to public pressure while highlighting the complexities of immigration policy and its social ramifications.
