The Trump administration has expanded sanctions against Nicaraguan officials following the death of Indigenous leader Brooklyn Rivera while in custody. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned Rivera’s death as “horrific” and noted that over 100 officials and their families are now subject to visa restrictions, totaling more than 2,350. Rivera, who had been detained since September 2023, was a vocal critic of President Daniel Ortega’s government, which has faced accusations of human rights abuses and repression of dissent.
