Kuwait expels two Iranian diplomats after airport strike

Kuwait’s Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned Iran’s Chargé d’Affaires in response to missile strikes that targeted Kuwait’s airport early Wednesday morning. The strikes, which led to one death and 63 injuries, damaged vital facilities, including diplomatic missions. In retaliation, Kuwait declared two Iranian diplomatic staff members persona non grata, demanding their departure within 24 hours. Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman Al-Mashaan condemned the Iranian attacks as “heinous” and dismissed Iran’s claims that Kuwait and Bahrain were responsible for the assaults as baseless. Iran’s government alleged that the two Gulf nations facilitated U.S. military operations against Iran, further escalating tensions in the region.

Why It Matters

The escalation of hostilities between Kuwait and Iran reflects broader regional tensions, particularly surrounding U.S.-Iran relations. The recent missile strikes come amid heightened military activity, including a U.S. Central Command operation targeting an oil tanker believed to be linked to Iran. Historically, Kuwait has maintained a delicate balance in its foreign policy, navigating complex relationships with Iran and the U.S. The incident underscores the risks of military confrontations in the Gulf region, which can destabilize relations among neighboring countries and impact global oil markets.
