First EV-to-EV fast charger set for testing

An Australian company, Alpine Energy, has launched a pioneering direct EV-to-EV charger designed to assist electric vehicles (EVs) that have run out of power. The Melbourne-based firm aims to support stranded motorists on remote roads, worksites, and mines with its MGEN M40 charger. Unlike traditional charging methods that require bringing vehicles to charging stations, this technology delivers rapid charging directly to the stranded vehicle. The initial prototype can provide enough power for 65 kilometers of driving range from just 15 minutes of charging. Alpine is now inviting roadside assistance companies and fleet operators to participate in trials of the innovative technology. The company claims its system can output 40kW of power using a petrol/electric hybrid vehicle’s battery, which significantly outpaces existing vehicle-to-vehicle charging options.

Why It Matters

This development is significant as it enhances the mobility and viability of electric vehicles, particularly in areas lacking charging infrastructure. As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise in Australia, with one in six new cars sold being battery electric, solutions for charging in remote areas are increasingly critical. Historical trends show that EV sales surged due to government subsidies, which are expected to decline in 2027. The introduction of direct EV-to-EV charging technology addresses a pressing need for reliable roadside assistance for electric vehicle users, potentially reducing range anxiety and promoting further adoption of electric vehicles.
