Australia’s digital infrastructure at risk of cyber attacks

Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized the nation’s vulnerability to attacks on subsea cables during the 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue, noting a concerning trend of “historically unprecedented” assaults on critical underwater infrastructure. He pointed out that several subsea cables have been severed in the Baltic Sea and the Taiwan Strait since November 2024, raising alarms about the security of these vital connections. Marles stated that approximately 99% of Australia’s internet traffic relies on just 15 subsea cables, making the country particularly exposed to disruptions. The situation is even more precarious for Pacific island nations, which typically depend on a single cable. Marles highlighted the essential role these cables play in supporting modern civilization, stating that they are crucial for financial systems, health care, and communication networks.

Why It Matters

Australia’s reliance on subsea cables is recognized as a significant vulnerability, with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute labeling it an “Achilles’ heel.” The cables’ routes converge at limited landing points, increasing the risk of simultaneous disruptions. Historically, attacks on critical infrastructure have raised concerns about national security and economic stability. As Australia’s dependence on high-speed internet and artificial intelligence tools grows, the potential impact of subsea cable disruptions could have far-reaching consequences for the nation’s economy and its global competitiveness.
