NASA plans moon base with landers, buggies, and drones for 2028 mission

NASA is advancing its plans for a lunar base by ordering landers, rovers, and drones shortly after the Artemis II mission’s lunar flyby. The agency has awarded contracts totaling hundreds of millions to four U.S. companies, including Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, which will provide landers to transport moon buggies to the south pole. The rovers will be developed by Astrolab and Lunar Outpost, while Firefly Aerospace will deliver the initial drones to the moon. NASA aims to have this equipment ready before the first astronauts land, expected as early as 2028. Artemis III, set for mid-2027, will involve astronauts practicing docking maneuvers with lunar landers. The moon base’s second phase will focus on constructing permanent infrastructure, including a power grid, with the goal of supporting extended astronaut missions in the 2030s.
