New Jersey governor denied access to Newark ICE detention center

Anti-ICE protesters clashed with law enforcement outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey, on Monday, amid allegations of poor conditions for detainees. Protesters attempted to form a human chain around the facility, while New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was denied access to the center, raising concerns about transparency. Sherrill has voiced opposition to private detention facilities and is advocating for the closure of Delaney Hall, as well as opposing the proposed Roxbury facility. Tensions escalated when some demonstrators threw water at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who detained several individuals during the protest. Inside the facility, nearly 300 detainees have initiated a hunger and labor strike, asserting that they are held in “inhumane” conditions, while the Department of Homeland Security claims that detainees receive adequate care and services.

Why It Matters

The situation at Delaney Hall reflects ongoing debates about immigration enforcement and detention practices in the United States. Critics argue that private detention facilities often prioritize profit over humane treatment, leading to poor living conditions for immigrants. In 2025, a DHS official characterized the detainees as serious offenders, yet allegations of mistreatment persist, prompting calls from local officials and advocates for reform and closure of such facilities. This conflict highlights the broader national discourse on immigration policy and the treatment of undocumented individuals in detention.
