At least 49 attacks by illegal Israeli settlers were reported in the West Bank within a single week from May 12 to May 18, according to the United Nations. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicated that these attacks resulted in casualties and damage, including increased incidents of arson targeting homes, farmland, vehicles, and even a mosque. Since the beginning of the year, over 870 settler attacks have affected more than 220 communities, leading to injuries and property loss. During a news briefing, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric emphasized the importance of international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in humanitarian efforts in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, calling for their work to be supported. He also highlighted ongoing humanitarian assistance in Gaza, urging for essential supplies to be allowed in to prevent a collapse of critical services.
Why It Matters
The frequency of settler violence in the West Bank has raised concerns regarding human rights and the impact on Palestinian communities. Historical tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have persisted since the establishment of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories following the 1967 Six-Day War. These settlements are considered illegal under international law, although Israel disputes this. The ongoing violence and property damage disrupt daily life for Palestinians, complicating humanitarian efforts and exacerbating an already precarious situation in the region.
