2026 Atlantic hurricane season expected to have below average tropical activity

This year’s Atlantic hurricane season is expected to experience below-average tropical activity, as indicated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The agency attributes this decrease in storm activity primarily to the anticipated emergence of El Niño, which is expected to persist throughout the season. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and NOAA currently estimates a 55% chance of below-average activity this year, projecting between eight to 14 named storms, including three to six hurricanes, with one to three potentially reaching Category 3 intensity or higher. For comparison, an average season typically sees 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. Last year’s season was notable for having no hurricanes make landfall in the United States, although it still produced three Category 5 hurricanes, including Hurricane Melissa, which significantly impacted Jamaica.

Why It Matters

The prediction of a below-average Atlantic hurricane season is significant because it may influence preparations and response plans for coastal communities. Historically, hurricane seasons can vary widely in intensity and frequency, with factors such as El Niño affecting weather patterns. The absence of landfalling hurricanes in 2022 was a rare occurrence, marking the first time in a decade that no hurricanes made landfall in the U.S., yet the season still saw catastrophic storms. Understanding the patterns of tropical activity is crucial for public safety and resource allocation in regions vulnerable to hurricanes.
