Anthea Yule elected as first female president of Hawke’s Bay Federated Farmers

Federated Farmers Hawke’s Bay has appointed its first female president, Anthea Yule, following the resignation of Jim Galloway after eight years in the position. Yule, who previously served as the provincial Meat and Wool sector chairwoman for seven years and as vice-president for four years, assumed her new role during the annual meeting in Napier last week. A multi-generational sheep and beef farmer, Yule has lived in Hawke’s Bay since 1987, managing a farm of 400 hectares with a stock capacity of approximately 8000 units. She has been involved in family succession planning within her agricultural business and has four children, one of whom, Charles, was recognized as Farmers of the Year at the 2026 Hawke’s Bay Primary Sector Awards.

Why It Matters

The election of Anthea Yule marks a significant milestone in the history of Federated Farmers Hawke’s Bay, highlighting the increasing representation of women in leadership roles within agricultural organizations. The agricultural sector has traditionally been male-dominated, and Yule’s presidency could inspire more women to pursue leadership positions in farming and agribusiness. Historically, the organization has played a crucial role in advocating for farmers’ interests and shaping agricultural policy in New Zealand. The transition in leadership comes at a time when the farming community faces various challenges, including environmental concerns and market volatility, making effective leadership essential for addressing these issues.
