A man wielding a rifle executed a series of attacks in Tarsus, a city in southern Turkey, on Monday, resulting in at least six fatalities and eight injuries, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The assailant, identified as 37-year-old Metin O, initially shot and killed his wife in a street before targeting a restaurant, where he killed the owner and an employee. Subsequent reports indicate that he also shot a teenager and a 50-year-old man in another neighborhood before fleeing in a vehicle. Police, supported by helicopters and drones, are actively searching for the suspect, who remains at large. Erdogan expressed condolences for the victims but did not disclose any information regarding the shooter’s motives.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights a troubling trend of gun violence in Turkey, where recent shootings have raised concerns about public safety. In the past month, a school shooting in Kahramanmaras left ten people dead, and another school attack injured sixteen. The prevalence of firearms in Turkey is significant, with estimates suggesting that millions of unregistered weapons are owned by citizens, contributing to the rising incidents of gun-related violence. Such events underscore the urgent need for discussions surrounding gun control and public safety measures in the country.
