Yam Madar joins NCAA ranks after being selected by Boston Celtics

Former Boston Celtics draft pick Yam Madar is set to make his way to the United States this fall, but not as expected. The Israeli point guard, who was selected by the Celtics in the 2020 NBA Draft, will instead join the NCAA ranks for the 2026-27 season, playing for Louisiana State University (LSU). Madar, a EuroLeague Rising Star, is reported to earn $5 million during his age 26 season while competing in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) under coach Will Wade. He leaves Hapoel Tel Aviv, where he has played since 2024, to embark on this new chapter in his basketball career.

Why It Matters

This move highlights the evolving landscape of NCAA basketball as it increasingly professionalizes, with players like Madar opting for college over traditional professional routes. The NCAA has seen a significant influx of international talent, as young athletes seek exposure and development opportunities in the U.S. This shift in recruitment reflects broader trends in global basketball, where European players are increasingly making their mark in U.S. collegiate athletics. Madar’s transition also underscores the financial dynamics of college sports, particularly with lucrative deals becoming more common for top prospects.
