As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, USA TODAY Sports is honoring the occasion by recognizing the 250 greatest American sports figures. In addition, the USA TODAY Network is exploring the origins of the country’s sports culture by spotlighting high school athletes who have made significant contributions to their communities. Currently, the focus is on girls’ basketball, with five players from the Greater New Bedford area named as all-time greats: Katherine Cheesebro, Jessica Gaspar, Kara Charette, Gretchen Rodrigues, and Kate O’Shaughnessy. Cheesebro holds the area record for career points scored in girls’ basketball with 2,058, while Gaspar previously held the school record at Dartmouth with 1,840 points. Charette, Rodrigues, and O’Shaughnessy also made their mark with impressive achievements and contributions to their respective schools and teams.

Why It Matters

Recognizing outstanding high school athletes highlights the critical role that sports play in shaping local communities and fostering talent. Celebrating these players not only honors their individual accomplishments but also inspires future generations to engage in athletics. The emphasis on girls’ basketball underscores the growing recognition of female athletes in sports, reflecting broader societal changes regarding gender equity and representation in athletics. These athletes serve as role models, demonstrating the impact of dedication and excellence in sports at the grassroots level.
