West Ham United is set to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday, with the Hammers in a critical position, currently sitting 18th in the Premier League table and two points adrift of safety. After a disappointing 1-0 loss to Arsenal, West Ham aims to secure crucial points to bolster their survival chances. They have struggled offensively, failing to score in their last three away league matches, and another match without a goal would match their longest scoreless away streak since May 2015. Despite this, West Ham achieved a 3-1 victory over Newcastle earlier this season and won 2-0 at St James’ Park last season, providing some hope as they look to exploit Newcastle’s defensive weaknesses. Almost all key players are available, with only Adama Traoré sidelined due to injury.
Why It Matters
West Ham’s current standing is critical as they fight to remain in the Premier League, which is vital for financial stability and club resources. Historically, the team has faced relegation battles in previous seasons, making their performance in the upcoming match crucial for maintaining their top-flight status. The club’s previous successes against Newcastle provide a psychological advantage, yet their recent scoring drought highlights pressing issues that could impact their ability to secure survival. With the relegation zone tightening, every match point becomes increasingly significant, affecting not only West Ham but also competitors battling to avoid relegation.
