DRC Health Minister Warns of ‘Very High’ Ebola Lethality Rate as Toll Reaches 80

At least 80 deaths have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s new Ebola disease outbreak, with nearly 250 suspected cases recorded in eastern DRC. The Bundibugyo strain, with a high lethality rate of up to 50 percent, has no vaccine or specific treatment. Concerns have been raised about the potential spread of the disease to neighbouring countries due to intense population movement, high population density, and cross-border travel.

Why It Matters

The current Ebola outbreak in the DRC is particularly concerning due to the high number of deaths and cases in a short period, as well as the geographical proximity to Uganda and South Sudan. The lack of a vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain adds to the urgency of containing the disease. The involvement of international medical aid groups highlights the need for a coordinated and sustained response to prevent further spread of Ebola in the region.
