UAE affirms self-reliance in defending sovereignty

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) asserted its capability to deter aggression and defend its sovereignty during a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in New Delhi. Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar rejected Iranian criticisms and accusations, labeling them as violations of international law and the UN Charter. He emphasized that the UAE would not be swayed by pressure tactics or malicious claims and maintains its rights to respond to any hostile actions. Since February 28, the UAE has intercepted nearly 3,000 ballistic missiles, drones, and cruise missiles targeting its critical infrastructure amid heightened regional tensions following the US and Israeli military actions against Iran. Al Marar also accused Iran of disrupting crucial maritime routes, specifically the Strait of Hormuz, calling such actions “piracy.” These comments followed Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s allegations of the UAE’s cooperation with Israel and direct involvement in attacks on Iran.

Why It Matters

The UAE’s declaration of its defensive capabilities comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following the US and Israeli military involvement against Iran. Since February, regional instability has surged, with Iran retaliating against US allies in the Gulf and closing key maritime routes. The UAE’s interception of missiles and drones highlights the ongoing threat to its national security. The situation is compounded by the historical context of UAE-Iran relations, which have been fraught with tension over territorial disputes and regional influence, making the UAE’s stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity significantly relevant in the current geopolitical climate.
