Indigenous tourism boards separate from ITAC due to financial concerns

Three Indigenous tourism organizations have announced their withdrawal of support from the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) due to concerns over financial mismanagement and a lack of transparency regarding fund allocation. Indigenous Tourism Ontario (ITO), Indigenous Tourism B.C. (ITBC), and the Nova Scotia Indigenous Tourism Enterprise Network (NSITEN) have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a new national tourism organization, inviting other groups to join. This decision follows a series of unresolved issues and public concerns about ITAC’s governance. ITBC Chair Brenda Baptiste noted that the organizations attempted mediation with ITAC’s leadership but found no meaningful participation. Meanwhile, ITAC’s CEO, Keith Henry, attributed the crisis to a lack of federal funding and claimed that financial mismanagement accusations were unfounded. He stated that ITAC has made efforts to resolve issues while highlighting the critical need for infrastructure investment in Indigenous tourism.

Why It Matters

This situation underscores the ongoing challenges facing Indigenous tourism in Canada, particularly regarding governance and funding. ITAC, established in 2012, has faced significant financial difficulties, including a decline in federal funding and unmet commitments from external sources. The withdrawal of support from key organizations like ITO, ITBC, and NSITEN indicates a rift in the Indigenous tourism community, which may hinder collaborative efforts to promote and develop this sector. The formation of a new national organization reflects growing dissatisfaction with ITAC’s management and the urgent need for transparent leadership in the Indigenous tourism landscape.
