Scientists have warned FIFA that global warming has increased the risk of extreme heat during the upcoming 2026 World Cup, with one in four games potentially being played in very hot conditions. This is a significant increase since the last tournament hosted in the US in 1994. The World Weather Attribution network of climate scientists estimates that 26 out of 104 matches could see temperatures of at least 26C on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature index, posing a risk to players and fans. The risk of dangerous heat has nearly doubled since 1994, prompting calls for preventive measures to protect everyone involved in the tournament.

Why It Matters

The increased risk of extreme heat at the 2026 World Cup highlights the growing impact of global warming on major sporting events. With a higher likelihood of matches being played in dangerous heat conditions, there is a need for FIFA to implement effective measures to ensure the safety and well-being of players and fans. This serves as a reminder of the urgent action needed to address climate change and its consequences on sports and public health.
