One French passenger and one from the US have tested positive for hantavirus infections after being evacuated from a cruise ship in the Canary Islands. The French woman’s condition is deteriorating, while the American man tested mildly positive. Both are receiving medical care as health authorities monitor other passengers for symptoms. The outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has led to a total of 10 confirmed cases, with two deaths and one probable death reported by the World Health Organization.

Why It Matters

The hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship highlights the risks of infectious diseases spreading in enclosed spaces. As countries repatriate passengers and implement isolation measures, the focus is on breaking the transmission chains to protect public health. With the fatality rate of the Andes strain of hantavirus reaching 40 to 50 percent, authorities are emphasizing the need for calm and caution in dealing with this outbreak.
