Texas mother warns of safety concerns after over 6 weeks in ICE custody

After spending over six weeks in ICE custody, Meenu Batra, a Texas single mother of four, expressed her fear of future detainment. Batra, originally from India, had been living and working legally in the U.S. for decades when she was arrested at a Texas airport on March 17. Despite having documentation to prove her legal status, Batra was held for 45 days at the El Valle Detention Facility before a federal judge ordered her release, stating there was “no discernible reason” for her detention. Her children are relieved she is home but are still coping with the emotional aftermath of her arrest. Batra, who fled violence in India as a teenager, has a pending habeas petition challenging her detention as illegal. The Department of Homeland Security maintains that her arrest was lawful, asserting she had a final order of removal since 2000.

Why It Matters

Meenu Batra’s case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the treatment of immigrants in the U.S. legal system, particularly regarding ICE detentions. The U.S. has a complex immigration system, with many individuals living in the country under various statuses, including those with withholding of removal, which does not grant citizenship. The emotional and psychological effects on families subjected to such detentions are significant, often leading to fear and anxiety among children and loved ones. This situation is part of broader national discussions on immigration policy and enforcement, particularly under differing administrations.
