AirAsia places multibillion-dollar Airbus order

Airbus Canada has secured a landmark deal with AirAsia, committing to supply 150 A220 jets manufactured in Mirabel, Quebec. This agreement represents the largest single firm order for the A220 model in Airbus’s history and is a significant win for the Canadian aviation sector. Lars Wagner, head of Airbus’s commercial aircraft division, emphasized Quebec’s strategic role in the global aviation industry during the announcement. The event was attended by Prime Minister Mark Carney, highlighting the Canadian government’s initiative to expand trade relationships beyond the United States. Despite ongoing production challenges at the Montreal facility, which has been producing only half the required number of jets to achieve profitability, the deal is considered a positive development for the local workforce.

Why It Matters

This deal is crucial as it underscores the importance of the Canadian aerospace industry, particularly in Quebec, which has historically been a hub for aircraft manufacturing. Airbus’s Montreal-area plant has faced significant production hurdles, producing an average of seven jets monthly, far below the breakeven point. This announcement could potentially lead to increased production capacity and job creation in the region, aligning with the federal government’s objectives to diversify trade and strengthen the economy. The A220 jets have been positioned as competitive options in the narrow-body market, making this order significant for Airbus’s growth in North America.
